The recently introduced initiative by the Indian government, known as PM Surya Ghar Yojana or the Free Electricity Scheme, has been launched with the objective of delivering free electricity to one crore households through the installation of rooftop solar power systems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially unveiled the scheme, named ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme,’ offering free electricity up to 300 units every month, as he discussed it on the social media platform ‘X.’

Required Documents For PM Surya Ghar Yojana

To apply for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, individuals need to follow a specific set of instructions and provide essential documents, including Aadhaar card, income certificate, residence proof, electricity bill, bank account details, passport-sized photograph, and caste certificate if applicable.

Application Process for PM Surya Ghar Yojana

1. Visit the official website “pmsuryaghar.gov.in.”
2. Initiate the registration process.
3. Select your state and electricity distribution company.
4. Input your electricity customer number, email ID, and mobile number.
5. Log in with your mobile number and customer number, then apply for rooftop solar installation.
6. Once approved, engage registered vendors in your distribution company for the installation.
7. Submit information about the installed solar power system and apply for a net meter.
8. After DISCOM inspection and net meter installation, generate your commissioning certificate from the portal.
9. Provide bank account details and a canceled cheque on the portal.
10. Receive the subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.

Eligibility for PM Surya Ghar Yojana
To be eligible for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, applicants must be Indian citizens and permanent residents of the country. Additionally, the annual family income should be less than Rs 150,000.

The plan for installing solar panels was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the interim budget of 2024-25.
